How To Store Blueberries

Blueberries are one of my favorite fruits and in honor of National Blueberry Month, here are some tips to keep your blueberries fresh longer!

  1. Store in the fridge

Some produce like peaches need to stay on the counter to ripen. That is not the case with blueberries since they are already ripe! Do not store your blueberries on the counter, keep them in the fridge. If you have room, you will want to store blueberries in the main part of the fridge, not the crisper drawer. They’ll have more airflow that way which keeps them from getting moldy.

  2. Do not rinse until you are ready to eat them

I know, I know, you want to rinse your fresh produce as soon as you get it. But with berries, you do not want to rinse your blueberries until you are ready to eat them. As soon as you cut or clean produce, you speed up the decomposing process. When you rinse your blueberries too early and then put them away, they start to get mushy and moldy. So do your best to only rinse what you are going to eat.

  3. Freeze extra blueberries

If you have too many blueberries (if there such a thing), do not throw them away. You can freeze them instead! Be sure to rinse them and then either pat dry or air dry. Then place the blueberries in a ziplock and put in the freezer! They’ll be great in a smoothie, yogurt or as a cold snack. Or you can get creative and put them in an ice cube for that cocktail you’ve been looking forward to all day.

These are just a few tips to storing blueberries. You’ll notice that they stay fresh much longer when you follow these steps.
