How to Wash & Cut Peaches

How to Wash & Cut Prima® Wawona Peaches

One of my favorite summer and early fall fruits are peaches. Once you are ready to eat your Prima® Wawona peaches, you’ll want to follow these steps to properly wash and cut them.

  1. Wash

It’s important you don’t wash your peaches until you are ready to eat them. Once you expose them to excess water, it will start to break down the protective peach fuzz. The fuzz naturally protects the delicate peach skin from insects and harmful pathogens. Rub them under running water and rub with your thumb firmly. Then dry with a paper towel!

  2. Cut the peach in half

Starting at the stem, use a sharp knife to slice down the peach sides. Turn the peach and hold your knife while keeping it in contact with the pit the entire time until it’s made a complete circle.

  3. Separate the halves

Use your hands to grab both sides of the peach and then simply twist in opposite directions.

  4. Remove the pit

Some peaches will cling to the pit more then others and that is because there are two types of peaches, clingstone and freestone. This is categorized by how much the flesh clings to the pit. Freestone peaches have fruit that easily pulls away from the pit, while clingstone peach flesh stubbornly clings to the pit. So use your fingers to remove the pit from the peach. You can also use a spoon to loosen the pit by sliding it under the pit. This should be fairly easy if it is ripe!

  5. Cut into slices

Now you can slide the rest up! Start at the top where the stem was, and simply cut down!
