Beginners Gardening Supplies List

I decided to plant my first garden at my new studio apartment! My landlord, Catherine just so happens to be one of my best friends and “Insta-wife.” Now you all know who is behind the camera taking pictures of me 70% of the time. Catherine has been Harvest Joy’s #1 fan and she let me plant my first garden using garden boxes. We are both beginner gardeners and put together a list of the supplies we used.

Pick the right seeds
I kept it local and used seeds from the San Diego Seed Company. The owner Brijette Peña produces organic heirloom varieties adapted for Southern California. By buying local varieties, you get seeds that are acclimated to your climate. The plants are familiar with the local weather which makes it easier for gardeners like myself to grow a garden!
Decide what garden box to use
My friend Catherine had these CedarCraft garden boxes which are designed for limited space gardening. She lined them with black trash bags and cut a hole for water to drain. Then she placed a rock over the hole so that the dirt wouldn’t get backed up.
Buy the right soil for your garden
We used this Miracle Grow Organic Soil because it is specifically for raised plant beds. Then mixed in some planting soil from Whitney Farms to increase the organic matter. At two weeks we will give our veggies a little extra plant food to help them grow!
Have a few tools handy
You don’t need to get fancy! I like this set because it covers all the bases. I used an old fork like the one the set to break up and aerate the soil before planting the new seeds.
Get yourself some cute and hardy garden gloves
I don’t mind getting my hands dirty but once in a while I might want to spare the nail polish I just painted on. These garden gloves are super cute and the material of back part is leather.
Consider a gardening apron
I have had my Carhartt jacket for years. I wear it to work in the mornings and at the ranch when it gets cold. If you have a bigger garden than mine, you could probably use an apron. This Carhartt Wildwood Apron is cute and will last forever!

I can’t wait to start harvesting veggies from my little garden. The carrots will take 60-70 days to grow so in the mean time I will just have to be patient and make sure I water it!
